Al Hubbard

Al Hubbard: When Turtles Talk is a solo exhibition by Northern Arapahoe artist Al Hubbard, exploring the intersection of Indigenous cosmology and contemporary material culture through layered, mixed-media works. Drawing on traditions such as ledger art, parfleche design, and beadwork, Hubbard combines printmaking, painting, and assemblage to create textured compositions that blur the line between two- and three-dimensional space. Through processes of sanding, layering, and transfer, each piece reveals a visible history of time and erosion, while incorporating found materials and everyday objects. Rooted in Native heritage yet firmly contemporary, even to the extent of incorporating a pop-art sensibility, Hubbard’s work weaves together wildlife imagery, cosmological forms, and modern motifs to challenge conventional narratives of Indigenous identity and offer a vision of continuity, resilience, and transformation.
